Works For Me: Free Fonts

WfmwsmallI was chatting with my designer buddy Jules last week, when she casually mentioned that I should check out Urban Fonts, home to roughly 38 quadzillion free fonts.

Free!  Fonts!

And now, my poor little Dell laptop is wailing and gnashing its teeth, groaning under all the weight of the downloads,

  1. Joy says:

I can sympathize! I’m an amateur/professional graphic/desktop designer and I often suffer from font-envy. I’ve used before to download free fonts, but hadn’t heard of Urban before. I guess I have some downloadin’ to do tonight!

  2. Kathy in WA says:

Shannon – you are kidding me!! Just last night (and I am NOT joking) I was looking for a fiolex girls font that someone from church used. Where did I end up???? Urban Fonts!!
How fun! I’m like you, I wanted them ALL! I wish they had a package you could grab rather than need to do each one. You might want to link to a How To info site so people could learn how to install them on their computer.
    Here’s what I found on
    Installing Fonts

  3. Brandy Brow says:

I am a fontoholic. My fave font site is but I hadn’t stumbled upon Urban Fonts yet. There’s also a Yahoo Group that distributes fonts for free in weekly batches. I don’t recall the name since I unsubbed moons ago, but you can go to and search under fonts.
Watch out hard drive. Here I come!
    Brandy of The Building Brows

  4. Julie says:

To go with your gazillion fonts you might want to look into a font management program called “Font Thing”. In fact I’ll make that, along with how to install fonts, my WFMW. Give me 5 minutes 🙂

  5. Stretch Mark Mama says:

Yes, yes yes, I’m married to a fontaholic graphic designer. And yes about the “Font Thing” – I believe it’s a font organizer. A FONT ORGANIZER!!! Have we all gone mad?!?!?
And here’s a little snicker for you. DH used to do the screen graphics for Sunday services…and some of his favorite fonts to use (coincidentally) had swear words as titles.
“Jesus loves me this I know…”

  6. Kathryn - The Empty Nest says:

Thanks for the info on the fonts. I have gone to the site and I have added it to my favorites. I will go back there later when I have more time. I am guessing that you can dowload these fonts and use them on your blog if you have a custom web design. I don’t think my blog, since I have a classic template will allow it, but I will see.
By the way, I goofed up and forgot to put down the description of my household hint so I added an additional link. You can delete #91 if you want to because #92 has the description of Clipless Chip Bag.
    Thank you!

  7. Stretch Mark Mama says:

After staying up way too late (again), I just wanted to say “Thanks, Shannon!” for doing WFMW each week. This week I had “time” to browse through several of the posts, and a good handful of them were great tips for my life right here, right now. So thanks for being a blessing to us all!

  8. Kathryn - The Empty Nest says:

Shannon, I am sooo sorry that I am such a ninny…it’s late and I can’t think straight.
I received a comment from your site stating that they couldn’t find my blog by clicking on my name and they had to google my blog.
So, I came back and clipped on my two posts #91 and #92 and the URL was incorrect that i gave.
I just posted #96 so if you can, you can delete Items 91 and 92.

  9. Amanda says:

Shannon, Thank you so much for passing this addiction on! I am in such bad need for some new fonts…SO sick of the old ones.Have a great day!

  10. ames says:

yay, free fonts! You have to be careful with them though, you can install too many to your computer and then certain software programs (like adobe photoshop :P) will have a heart attack when trying to open. But I do love me some fonts 🙂

  11. Janelle says:

I love urban fonts. My faves are cheri and brady bunch remastered. You can do an entire document in the brady bunch title font. 🙂

  12. pam says:

So cool! Can’t wait to make my Mac breathe heavy under the weight of these new fonts! They are certainly Mac compatible if Jules uses them . . .

  13. Darlene says:

Ok, so #186 is not right! I forgot to put my new URL in and so it is my Tiny Talk Tuesday post. #187 is the right one.
    Sorry! I couldn’t delete it.

  14. Mari Ickes says:

I love works for me Wednesday, Shannon! Thank you-I look forward to reading it each week. I ran out of ideas for awhile, but I think I’m back!!

  15. Christina says:

golly gee, why are fonts so much fun? I am a lover of words and fonts just make it so much more fun to read them!
okay, so what is that first font you typed in called? (“because I can” one) that’s one I see all the time in these scrappy mags I’m reading. I love that one.
If you can, zip me a note on the name of it!

  16. Babychaser says:

I love fun fonts! I really do… but I rarely, if ever, download them anymore. Especially free ones. The reason is that sometimes (and my husband would probably say all the time… but he is the computer guy) they come with spyware or other such things that can and often do bog your computer down over time!
I’d watch out for it… otherwise, enjoy those fun fonts for me. 🙂

  17. Kelly @ Love Well says:

    Oh dear.
I have a serious Font Addiction. I’ve been sober for a few months now. But I fear this threatens to push me right back into the abyss.
Would your blog insurance cover treatment for me?

  18. Brenda on the S OR Coast says:

Oh! This is a good one… but I still can’t find the font I’m looking for. =(
A few years ago (four, maybe?) I downloaded a font that had heart-shaped dots on the ends of all the letters. Like, at the top and bottom of an “l,” etc. I’ve searched and searched to find it again.

  19. Kaye says:

Although I have read many entires to the this carnival before, this is my first time to participate! So exciting!

  20. Kaye says:

Although I have read many entires to the this carnival before, this is my first time to participate! So exciting!

  21. Anna says:

Oooh!! Yay! I am a font addict and collect them like it’s my job. I’ll have to go check those out! Thanks so much.

  22. Jen says:

This just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It takes me until next week to check out all the cool tips!
I love the fonts, so that will be my first stop!

  23. Kathryn - Boysmum2 says:

I love this link and always learn something new.
Keep trying to come up with tips to post about but then find that I miss linking it due to the time difference with USA and New Zealand.
Looking forward to a backward one again as i have something to find out about.

  24. Amy says:

My husband is addicted to fonts. It is sad that we can sit around and spend an evening discussing cool fonts. We are complete nerds.

  25. tiffany McGuigan says:

Thank you so much for the font link! My mac isnt happy cause its overloaded but Im thankful!!! 🙂
