I have a daughter who, sadly, inherited her mother’s hair. It’s thick, fine and there’s not a single curl in sight. And I have some serious concerns about using a curling iron on a little person who rarely stops moving.
Instead, I decided to try rag rollers, for an occasional day of curls. They’re easy, cheap and comfortable–a perfect solution. And my daughter loves them–it makes her feel like we’re playing dress-up.
1. Simply find some fabric (I used an old sheet), and tear or cut it into strips that are about six to eight inches long and 1 inch wide (for extremely long or thick hair, you might want them to be longer and wider–you can experiment as you go).

2. Take a strip of hair and hold the end at the center of one of the strips.

3. Roll it up (The first few times I did it, it felt awkward, and I needed an extra set of hands. You’ll get used to it after you’ve done it a while.)

4. Tie the rag roller into a single knot at the scalp.

5. Each segment of hair will look like this:

For best results, do this at bedtime with hair that is slightly damp (not wet). Because they’re made only of fabric, they’re completely comfortable to sleep in. In the morning, you’ll have a head full of curls, and they last all day!

We need an after photo!! Do you think it would hold with fine, thin hair. Cause my daughter has also inherited her mother’s hair, but I am not blessed with the thick. Bad hair days everyday.
Oh yes! My mom used to do our hair up in these when my sister and I were little. I even do mine in rag rollers now when I want some curls, but don’t want to use hot rollers.
They really work, and they’re so cute on little girls.
I’m definitely doing this. What a memory! I can see two little girl’s happy smiles already… and that really works for me!
Thank you, as always, Shannon…
Wow – I totally forgot about rag rollers! My mom and I used to do them all the time… fun memories 🙂
OK – I left my MIL’s pie- easy and perfect for the PMSing, pregnant or chocoholic woman, but if you find yourself in those states you should hide it from the men in the house.
I had nice, straight hair as a child, too. I tried everything to make my hair curly, and rag curlers were definitely the way to go.
Now I am just upset I spent so much time making my perfectly straight hair curly! As soon as straight hair became the rage about ten-fifteen years ago, my hair turned curly. The same thing happened to my sister–I guess it runs inthe family. Now I spend all my time trying to make my hair smooth and shiny again. (Well, not ALL my time; I’m not that vain!)
I used to do that with my hair. Sometimes the curl lasted to the next day!
I do this too with my daughters and they love it! The hair looks like an awesome spiral perm the next day!
Love the curling idea. My grandma used to put my hair up in gigantic rollers and set me under her hairdryer helmet-thingy. It was the only way I had any curl at all. Same with my girls now. I’ll have to give this a try.
PS aaaaghhhh! I forgot to give a short description of my post when I linked. (#30) I don’t know how to fix it, but I blogged about Morning Chore Charts. Sorry!
Hello! Thanks for holding and hosting this fun linkage! The rag rolls look painful, but not as painful as the regular rollers!
What a great tip! Someone I went to grammar school with said that her mother would put her hair inside socks when she went to sleep and it made her hair wavy.
Karen of the MomDot Street Team
http://www.MomDot.com
I had to curl my 5-year-old’s hair last spring for cheerleading competition – I ended up buying a cheap set of plastic rollers. I wish I’d known how to do this then! 🙂
That looks so much better than the nasty granny curlers my lovely Grandma used to put in my hair, pins and all! Or the pink spongey ones. I’m going to have to try this on my girls!
Aw, I totally forgot about the rag curls. My mom used to do that for me, what a great memory.
I want to see an after picture. Because I tried this on my hair. And it did *not* turn out well. Thankfully, my hair can’t hold a curl anyway. 😛 So the disaster was short-lived.
But I think your tip to try it on damp hair rather than wet would have made a big difference, too…
But it is funny that you posted this. Because I seriously just looked this up and tried it a few weeks ago. I thought no one else did this anymore!
My mom did this for me and now I do it for my little girl. She loves it and it is so much more comfortable then hard rollers. I like the bonding time while we roll them up too 🙂 We use old pantihose.
I had forgotten about rag rollers. I think my chickie girl would much prefer to sleep in those instead of curlers!
I haven’t thought about rag rollers since I read the Little House books. Great idea!
alas…I was the girl with the too many curls! My college roommate did this though-she was adorable with or without the rag rollers!
AWESOME!! I want to try this!! Thanks for the tips on the curls!!
I’d love to see a photo of the curls!
I’ve always wanted to try this, thanks so much for the post and the tips! I’ll be linking to this!
That is precious! Thanks for the great tip!
Can we see the “after” photo?
My mom used to do “finger curls,” one on each side of my head. In the 80s, I was so…very…60s.
Anyway.
My Know It All Brain couldn’t for the life of me think of a WFMW tip this week. Don’t know how you do it, Shannon!
What a good idea! I bet her hair turns out so cute!
gonna have to try that sometime 😉
I was just thinking of trying this on my daughter’s hair the other day but wasn’t sure how to do it. Thanks for the tutorial!
I can remember doing this when I was younger – I LOVED it! Thanks for reminding me…:)
do you think my boys would appreciate some rag rollers in their hair? probably not.
alas, my hair is short and there are no girls in my house to rag roller.
What a cute idea! I used to always have to wear those pink sponge rollers when I was a kid. When I’d wake up, they’d always be all crooked on my head and one side of my head would curl beautifully — the other, not.
Great idea, even though I have a mass of wavy hair, I have one daughter with thin straight hair. This would be a great idea for her. Would love to see an after picture!!!
Toni
My six year old’s hair is the same, fine and a lot of it. We started rag rolling it a couple years ago, and it works great!
So can I start calling you Ma Ingalls now?
This is a great idea — I curled my daughter’s hair recently when she was a flower girl, but I was terrified of damaging it (it’s so fine) or burning her! I’m going to try this!
Cool idea! I’ll have to try that with my daughter. 😀
That’s a great idea! I might try it on my own hair. 🙂
ooh la, la! great idea. i think i might have to try that for myself 🙂 i have super straight hair, and curling my hair w/ a curling iron sometimes takes too much time.
I love rag rollers! I published this for a Works for Me Wednesday ages ago, and I have tons of pictures with in-depth instructions! You can see it here.
Visit To Love, Honor and Vacuum today!
I will definitely remember this one for when Sweetpea’s hair gets a bit longer, how fun! I would love to see an after photo too! 🙂
I’ve GOT to try that! My daughter has “Alice in Wonderland” hair – long, blond and straight as a board! I sometimes put it in 6 to 8 braids while it’s damp and let her sleep in them. The next day we have waves that stay all day!
My mom tried that with me once when I was little. I have wavy/curly-ish hair, so when it was done, I looked like I had a poodle on my head.
So simple! I’ve tried sleeping in rollers myself but the curls on the crown never quite look right the next day…
I don’t have a little girl to practice on, but I maybe someday 🙂 Or maybe I’ll just try on myself, I always wanted to have curly hair.
I have to try this on my daughter! Thanks for the tip!
Could you post a picture of the result? Want to see what I can expect before I wrangle a child in a chair long enough to cover her head with rags! 🙂
How fun! I have never heard of them! I have the soft curly foam curlers…I would of loved to see an after picture!
Love it!
-Sandy Toes
This is a very “American Girl” thing to do and right up my daughter’s alley. Thanks for the reminder!
What a fun idea, better then the old stand by rollers.
I’d love to see an “after” photo too.
A friend once did my hair up in rag curls, which made no sense since I have thick, fine, curly hair. I think she just wanted to practice. Ilsa is starting to get curls as well, but she of course is hoping hers stays straight (too late, but she’s in denial).
I’d like to see how it looked afterwards, please! I have three daughters with that kind of hair.
So funny! We use to do this when I was little……a LONG time ago!:)
So sorry for the dual entries on your WFMW…my first time doing Mr. Linky and I’m not sure what happened! Thanks for all of the great ideas!
I love doing the kind of thing you read about in old books!
I would love to see an “after” photo! I bet Corrie looks absolutely adorable!
Carrie
After you put her hair up, you can read to her from Little house in the Big Woods – the Ingalls do this in that book. I always wanted to try this growing up, mostly because of my love of those books.
I agree with the majority here, picture is a must. :-). I need to try that on my daughter before she leaves the nest in two years! Did I say that????? arg!
Chel
Cute! I want a girl!
I loved it when my mom put my hair up in rag rollers when I was little!
I always felt extra special/pretty when my hair was curled! I still do I guess! I want to see an “after” pix of how the rag roll curls look!!
I let my roomates do this to me in University. They each took a side of my head and it only took a few minutes. Except one roomate did lots of little tiny pieces, and the other did several big pieces. The next morning, one side of my head had nice big relaxed ringlets and the other side looked like a tight perm. Oops! Good times.
I have to ask – where was that photo taken? It’s totally inconsistent with the other photos I’ve seen taken in your house. I’m curious.
I’d love to see a pic of the resulting curls! 🙂
Please post an “after” shot so we can see the curls.
I am so glad that you posted this! My youngest daughter wants curls and I have been wanting to use rags to do it but I haven’t been able to find anywhere on the internet that gave a step by step, simple tutorial so that I could learn. Thanks!
My mom used to do this to my hair with her knee socks back in the seventies. 🙂
I spend my teenage years buying rollers and braiding my hair for nothing. Really cool, I so did not konw this.
I have 2 daughters, one with curls and one as straight as straight can be. Can you guess which one would love me to try this???
you can use tp for end papers, just use 1 square and fold in half then place over the ends of her hair with the ends inside the fold then roll up, it keeps the ends smooth. I love rag curls we do our daughters like this all the time!
blessings, Penny Raine
http://pennyraine.com/blog
Thanks for adding the “no political posts” rule, Shannon. I like that you’ve made this WFMW thing a safe place for everyone. 🙂
that doesn’t look too hard at all, I think I need to try this with my daughters. They would love it! I’d love to see an after shot too.
That’s a great idea! Do you spray anything into her hair for the curls to keep from frizzing through the day?
thick, fine hair. not a curl in sight… we must be related!
I wish I had a little girl on which to try it! Maybe I could sneak up on one of my boys while he’s playing his Nintendo DS…their hair IS getting pretty long! Just kidding.
Great idea! Sleeping in those wire ones as a kid was no fun.
I use socks to accomplish the same thing. It works really well too.
This is a great idea! When I was little Mom used the sponge curlers and it was so hard to fall asleep with those in!!
I’m going to have to try this one!
Aww! I remember having those in my hair as a little girl every Saturday night! I got to have curly hair for church each week. So fun!
You’re a cool mom, Shannon!
Hey, my mom would wet my hair, wrap it around her finger and use bobby-pins to make curls/wringlets.
I’d sleep on them and the only bummer in the morning – if one fell out! I hated that! LOL
I think your way is better …
Hope you are having a wonderful September!
Sandy
I remember sleeping in the pink foam and plastic rollers when I was a little girl Not exactly the most comfortable when you first lie down, but I figured out a way to make it work, I guess.
Great tip! My daughter is 2, but she’s on the rather petite side and looks only 1. She doesn’t have enough hair to do this with yet, but I can hardly wait to do things like this when she does. :o)
Thanks for WFMW! I have learned a LOT of great tips and met really great Moms. I just wanted to know that this has blessed me.
Blessings, Whitney
I remember trying this. Sadly my hair is too straight to curl in any fashion. I once had a perm the only lasted 3 days!
My little sister has poker straight hair. Every special occasion (weddings, proms, etc) I rag roll her hair. It’s the only thing that will last for longer than 5 minutes!
My mom had four daughters and never did much of anything with our hair (straight, with straight bangs, hardly ever a ponytail or braid in sight!) but when HER mom (my grandma of course) came to visit, we’d do rag curls. Thanks for bringing back memories and giving me something to try on my daughter!
Very cute! Now if my daughter would only sit still long enough for me to try it!
I agree, send us an “after” photo. I have done this before on my daughters thick, straight hair, and she looked like Shirley Temple, but that was the look we were after 🙂
oh that is such a good idea. i will definitely have to pass that on to my straight haired friends 🙂
I gotta try this. My daughter’s hair is thin. I hope it works as well for her!
PS: Please delete Mrs. Querido (#266). It’s political!
What a great idea! I’ll have to give it a try on my niece’s hair.

I just missed the link so if you want to know two favourite things of mine then go to my blog.
Thanks I will try this trick with my daughter. Her hair is straight and it will look cute. I will post a pic when I do.
thanks for sharing weekly
My mom used to do this on my hair when I was little, except she used socks. Little ones, because they’re thinner and easier to work with.
And then the next day she’d use a curling iron to “fix” my bangs…the awful, poofy, HUGE kind of bangs.
Thanks for this idea – it encouraged my daughter to take a shower last night with no complaints, then when her hair was damp we rolled it up. She slept just fine and her hair was super-curly this morning! It is now wavy, so I think next time I’ll spritz her with a little hair spray (her hair is fine). We loved it!!
My daughter and her dance troupe have curls for their dance competitions and we use rags too.
If you are having trouble starting try using rags in triangles instead of strips. Just put one point to the end of the hair, fold it up & then roll away & tie them up just the same.
I would love to see the ‘after’ photo too!!

Wow! What a great idea – I’m gonna try that on myself! Thanks for sharing!
